Large Hard-paste Porcelain Bowl By Jacob Petit (circa 1845–1855)

This spectacular porcelain bowl by Jacob Petit (circa 1840–1850) perfectly illustrates the manufactory’s penchant for whimsical shapes and exuberant decoration, which made it famous. It is entirely covered with a rich relief decoration of foliage, flowers, and grape clusters, enhanced by elegant gilding. The neck is formed by a spectacular bearded male head crowned with a diadem, likely inspired by a royal or biblical figure, while the handle and spout feature naturalistic modeling imitating vine branches laden with grape clusters. The body is adorned with circular panels decorated with delicate, hand-painted polychrome flowers. The openwork lid, designed to hold ice cubes or herbs, completes this highly original composition.

This piece bears the authentic J.P. underglaze blue manufactory mark on its underside, confirming its production by the renowned Parisian workshop.
