Pierre Ernest Ballue, born February 27, 1855 in La Haye-Descartes, where he died May 18, 1928, was a French painter and draftsman from the Schools of Barbizon and Crozant. A pupil of Alexandre Defaux (1826-1900), Émile Charles Dameron (1848-1908), Étienne Maxime Vallée (1850-1881) and Corot, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français and received several medals there. A landscape painter from Touraine, he also traveled throughout France and painted views of the Midi and the Côte d'Azur, the region of Crozant and Fresselines. The term “school of Crozant” appeared in 1864; it is a generic term, no master having ever taught in the Creuse valleys. Similarly, the term "Barbizon school" was created in 1891. This designation is used to describe a succession of painters who came to paint or even settled in Crozant between the 1860s and until the middle of the 20th century.
