Auguste Majorelle (1825-1879)
Joseph Constantin Auguste Majorelle was a notable figure in 19th-century French decorative arts. Born in Lunéville on February 20, 1825, and died in Nancy on May 7, 1879, he specialized in ceramic decoration and furniture design.
He is often associated with the Lorraine craft tradition, particularly through his likely apprenticeship at the Faïencerie de Lunéville, a well-known producer of decorative earthenware. This experience likely shaped both his style and technical skills.
Majorelle also pursued a commercial venture by opening a shop in Lunéville to sell his creations. This shows that he was not only an artist but also an entrepreneur, actively promoting and marketing his work.
His artistic legacy continued within his family: he was the father of Louis Majorelle, a renowned Art Nouveau decorator and cabinetmaker, and the grandfather of the painter Jacques Majorelle, best known for the garden that bears his name in Marrakech.
