The sculptor's signature "A. JACQUEMART" is incised on the richly chiseled and ornamented naturalistic base . 
This is an early edition sculpture , dating from the second half of the 19th century .

Henri-Alfred Jacquemart (1824-1896)

Henri-Alfred Jacquemart , famous French sculptor, born on February 24 , 1824 in Paris .

He studied sculpture from 1845 at the School of Fine Arts in Paris .
He regularly presented his works at the Salon , from 1847 to 1879 .
Henri-Alfred Jacquemart built his reputation on animal sculpture , highly prized by the bourgeoisie at the time .
He was one of the sculptors who , with others such as Pierre-Louis Rouillard , Pierre-Jules Mêne and especially Antoine-Louis Barye , took advantage of the bourgeoisie's new enthusiasm for furniture sculptures , particularly animal sculptures , and the spectacular development of this market supported by the many art foundries that reached their peak in France at that time in the second half of the 19th century .

He traveled to Egypt and Turkey, countries that became a source of inspiration for him .
The sculptor received numerous commissions from the State and the City of Paris .

Henri-Alfred Jacquemart died in Paris on January 4 , 1896 .
