Antique French Holy Water Bottle, Solid Silver, Featuring The Sacred Heart Of Saint Joseph In Flames

One of my most recent acquisitions during my search for antiques in France.

A magnificent and rare medium-sized French Sacred Heart in flames, crafted from solid silver, originally made in the form of a small holy water bottle. Crafted from silver, this remarkable religious object represents divine love, sacrifice, and religious devotion.

The Sacred Heart is depicted with radiant flames, symbolizing Christ’s ardent love for humanity. The stylized flames, which rise above the heart in elegantly curving forms, give the object a particularly expressive and almost animated presence.

This piece bears the initials “S.J.”, most likely referring to Saint Joseph, which gives it a special devotional significance.

The flask bears three hallmarks: on the upper part of the flask’s reverse, on the ring, and on the removable ring located above the flames. I believe these are French hallmarks, which would be consistent with its French origin. The interior is gilded, providing additional protection for the silver while accentuating the object’s richness.

Depictions of the Sacred Heart, as well as religious objects such as ex-votos, were widely used in Catholic devotional traditions, particularly in France, Spain, and Latin America. Smaller examples could be kept as devotional objects or worn as protective religious amulets.

A rare and very beautiful example of French religious metalwork, combining the symbolism of the Sacred Heart with the practical form of a small holy water bottle.

Condition: Generally good antique condition. The object has two small dents that are difficult to see: one on the front right side and the other on the left side of the reverse. See the photographs.
