Oil On Canvas, "the Singer," Signed By Castelucho, Circa 1900–1920

Artist: Claudio Castelucho Y Diana ( 1870-1927)
Oil on canvas portrait of an opera singer, signed "Castelucho" in the lower right corner. Claudio Castelucho Y Diana (1870–1927) was an artist from Barcelona, Spain, who began his career working alongside his father, a set designer. He arrived in Paris in 1897, where he participated in the Salon. He settled in Montparnasse, where he quickly became a leading figure in the Spanish artistic community and a renowned teacher. He exhibited at the Moos Gallery in Geneva and continued to exhibit at the Paris salons, notably the Salon des Indépendants, until his death.
Here he depicts an opera singer captured in the midst of singing, recognizable by her passionate expression, the red flower in her hair, and her elegant ruffled gown. The work is characterized by a very lively, impasto, and expressive brushstroke, accompanied by remarkable handling of light and strong chromatic contrast, reminiscent of the Post-Impressionist movement—here marked by a strong Spanish influence (Luminism).
On the reverse of the canvas is a handwritten inscription: “84 rue d’Assas, Paris VI”—a legendary address in the artistic Montparnasse of the early 20th century, where Castelucho had his studio and lived for much of his time in Paris.
This painting is set in a substantial blackened wooden frame.
