Amiral Courbet By Henri Dubois Stucco Medallion 19th Century
Artist: Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois 1859-1943
A stucco medallion depicting in bas-relief the "Monument Erected to the Glory of Admiral Courbet," signed in pencil by Henri Dubois in the lower left corner, dating from the 19th century. Admiral Courbet (1827-1885) distinguished himself particularly during the Tonkin Expedition and the Sino-French War, the latter making him a true national hero. Several monuments were erected in his honor, notably in Abbeville, his birthplace. Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois (1859-1943), a student of Henri Chapu and Falguière, was chosen to create this monument, which can still be seen in Abbeville. Our medallion is preserved in its original gilt wood and stucco frame in the Napoleon III style.
It is in good condition, with a warm patina on the gilding.
