Piece Of Silk Fabric From Lyon, 1850
Artist: Grangier Frères Et Ogier
Beautiful Lyon silk fabric woven by Grangier Frères and Ogier This small piece represents the British Admiralty ship Wellington flying the flag. The ship is represented in the center of the scene. Two symbols close the decor on the upper and lower parts. In the lower part are embroidered the British royal coat of arms and in the upper part, the crowned Napoleonic Eagle whose arrows seem to threaten the British ship, in a symbolism presaging the victory of the France of the Empire over the English Empire. This small piece of fabric is unique. A small delicate frieze borders the sides. The embroidery is extremely fine. The presence of the signature "Grangier Frères" as well as "Ogier" testifies to the prestige of the dynasties of Lyon silk masters. The piece of silk is dated from the very beginning of the 1850s; It is very well preserved for the period and has only a tiny hole at the level of the British currency.
