Portrait of a man in a suit smoking while reading, an Art Deco-style pastel from around 1930. This intimate portrait of a businessman is reminiscent of the work of Charles Boucher Cermaise, a French artist from the first half of the 20th century known particularly for his portraits; he exhibited, notably, at the University of Houston in the United States, where he enjoyed great success. The man is depicted here seated, paused in his reading, his glasses in hand as he smokes a cigarette—a moment captured from everyday life. This painting is preserved in its original carved, gilded, and patinated wooden frame.
