Brown Glazed Stoneware Oil Jar With A Bacchus Design By Philippe Ménard—1987, Folk Art
A large glazed stoneware oil jar; the lid is adorned with a depiction of Bacchus drinking from his barrel, with a dog, a cat, and a full basket at his feet; the two-handled vessel is richly decorated with vine tendrils and birds.
Dimensions: height 44 cm – base diameter including handles 33 cm.
Signed on the underside of the base “MP” with a bunch of grapes (for Philippe Ménard) and dated 1987.
Philippe Ménard was born in 1950. Initially a student of architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he turned to working with clay after an apprenticeship with Pissareff in the Beauvais region.
In good overall condition. Two small chips are worth noting: one on the frieze of the lid at the back of the barrel, the other on the tail of a bird on the base.
