Large Glazed Earthenware Altarpiece From Ligron, Dated 1866 And Signed "taffary" - 19th-century Folk Art
A large polychrome terracotta devotional plaque for the home, featuring a richly detailed relief decoration in traditional shades of green, ochre, and brown.
The composition centers on the Virgin and Child beneath a portico surrounded by saints, overlooking a cartouche engraved with “Ave Maria” and a bas-relief of a stylized Sacred Heart, the whole framed by twisted columns and lateral ridges.
The base bears the incised inscription “Sarthe 1866 Ligron,” while the underside of the piece features two “Ligron” stamps and the incised handwritten signature of Taffary, a renowned dynasty of local master potters from the 19th century.
Dimensions: height 50 cm – width 34 cm.
In good condition, with a very fresh and glossy glaze. There is an old repair at the top, as well as a few glaze chips on the protruding reliefs.
A very beautiful piece of folk art, rare due to its size and triple identification.
Preferably picked up in person.
