Wall-mounted Fountain With A Rouen Earthenware Basin – 18th Century

A large baluster-shaped wall fountain with fluted columns, featuring rich polychrome decoration in a grand style, with a superb, overflowing basket of flowers at the center surrounded by acanthus scrolls. The upper rim is carved in high relief with two facing dolphins encircling a large rocaille-style scallop shell (a design similar to those produced by the Guillibaud factory). Original patinated metal spout.

Rouen, Louis XV period (circa 1750–1760).

The body of the fountain and its lid are in very good overall condition, showing only slight, scattered wear marks on the upper reliefs, as well as two (invisible) chips beneath the lid. The basin, however, has undergone significant and long-standing restoration work. It is marked by period cracks—which have been stabilized—running across the basin, as well as visible chips in the enamel on the borders and mascarons.
