18th-century mustard jar, made of high-fired earthenware, bearing this inscription in manganese black: "Mustard from Maille, Sole Vinegar Maker to the King and to L.M.J. (Their Majesties) R St André in Paris".
Antoine-Claude Maille opened his first shop in Paris in 1747 on Rue Saint-André (now Rue Saint-André-des-Arts, in the 6th arrondissement).
Dimensions: height 10 cm – diameter 6.8 cm.
An interesting specimen featuring attractive calligraphy; there is a significant chip on the reverse side.
