Rare reliquary containing a fragment of Christ’s tunic – Ex Linteo Vestis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi – 18th century

Description

A gilded brass reliquary containing a precious fragment of fabric set against a radiating background of gilded scrolls, in a style characteristic of the monastic workshops of the period.

The handwritten label in Latin reads as follows: “Ex Linteo Vestis immore imbuta D.N.J.C.”
This inscription is most likely an abbreviation or an archaic formulation referring to a fragment of the tunic (or garment) of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Domini Nostri Jesu Christi). Spelling variations and abbreviations are common on this type of ancient reliquary.

The reverse side retains its original red wax seal, pierced by silk threads, attesting that the reliquary has not been opened since its authentication.
The seal is well-preserved and features an ecclesiastical heraldic motif.

Due to the exceptional nature of its contents, this piece serves as a remarkable testament to 18th-century private piety.

Condition:

Good condition. Sealed reliquary, original glass in place, signs of wear consistent with its age. Intact wax seal

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale pertains solely to the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not part of the transaction but are included as a courtesy due to their historical and cultural value.
