Ibaraki Yazo And The Fantastic Fox, Japanese Woodblock Print By Utagawa Kunisada, 1856
A Kabuki theater woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting the character Ibaraki Yazō (茨木弥蔵), whose name is inscribed in the vertical red cartouche in the upper right corner. Yazō is depicted at night in a field of pampas grass (susuki), beneath a crescent moon, alongside a mythical fox (kitsune). Will-o'-the-wisps (kitsunebi) float all around them, evoking a scene of enchantment or metamorphosis. The character is portrayed by an actor from the famous Ichikawa Danjūrō lineage (recognizable by the family crest mimasu—three nested squares—visible on the shoulders of his kimono).
