Royal Armory of Torre Annunziata – Naples

This remarkable pair of pistols ranks among the finest examples of 18th-century Italian gunsmithing. With its design, the exceptional quality of its mechanics, the perfect uniformity of their chased silver mountings, and the refinement of their craftsmanship, they are fully representative of the output of the Real Fabbrica d’Armi di Torre Annunziata, a royal armory founded in 1757 to meet the needs of the Court of Naples.

A thorough study of this pair reveals a particularly coherent set of characteristics: typically Neapolitan design, mechanical quality of the very highest order, neoclassical decoration inspired by antiquity, perfect stylistic unity of the fittings, as well as the presence of an internal “B M” monogram, hand-engraved on the inside of both lock plates. Located in a spot that is completely hidden once the weapons are assembled, this mark serves no decorative function and constitutes a major piece of evidence supporting an attribution to Michele Battista, chief gunsmith of the Royal Armory of Torre Annunziata, whose works are now found in some of the most important public and private collections.

The fittings display remarkable consistency in execution. The thumb rest, trigger guard, muzzle caps, caps, and trigger guard bar all share the same ornamental style, executed on a matte background with finely polished reliefs. The quality of the engraving, the balance of the proportions, and the precision of the fit are hallmarks of a workshop of the very highest caliber.

The caps are adorned with an engraved medallion depicting a helmeted profile inspired by classical antiquity, surrounded by a delicate floral wreath. This decoration perfectly captures the neoclassical taste that took hold in Naples following the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii and characterizes the most prestigious works of the second half of the 18th century.

A comparison with the famous pair made around 1768 for Ferdinand IV of Naples—now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and attributed to Michele Battista—reveals a particularly close stylistic and technical affinity in the overall design, the quality of the mechanics, the treatment of the fittings, and the decorative language (see last image).

All of these observations—stylistic, technical, and mechanical—constitute a particularly strong case for attribution to Michele Battista and the Royal Armory of Torre Annunziata, one of the most prestigious centers for the production of luxury weapons in 18th-century Europe.

This pair stands as an exceptional testament to the refinement achieved by Neapolitan armsmaking under the Bourbons and embodies all the qualities sought after by the most discerning collectors: rarity, uniformity, quality of craftsmanship, historical significance, and remarkable state of preservation.
