Large Canton porcelain baluster vase

China, Qing Dynasty, late 19th century

Elegant Canton porcelain baluster vase with a faceted body and flared neck, made during the late Qing Dynasty, in the last quarter of the 19th century.

This piece features a remarkable polychrome decoration executed in the “Famille Rose” tradition, composed of lush peonies, chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, and flowering branches—symbols of prosperity, longevity, and renewal in Chinese art. The floral compositions, finely hand-painted, stand out elegantly against a slightly bluish-white background, characteristic of the fine Canton porcelain of this period.

The vase is adorned with two elegant side handles in relief, depicting qilin, mythological protective creatures of Chinese tradition. Executed in a beautiful deep green glaze, they provide a refined contrast to the richness of the floral decoration and attest to the craftsmanship of the Canton workshops.

The piece captivates with the harmony of its colors, the delicacy of its decoration, and the quality of its firing. The architecturally designed, faceted form—relatively uncommon—gives this piece a particularly elegant decorative presence.

Highly prized by collectors of Asian art, Canton porcelain from this period was produced for a discerning clientele, both in China and for export, and is now sought after for its quality of craftsmanship and decorative refinement.

A high-quality decorative piece, ideal for enriching a collection of Chinese porcelain or adding a touch of Eastern elegance to a classic or contemporary interior.
