An Unusual Toilet Stool Shaped Like A Stack Of Books, Early 20th Century

A charming and unusual decorative piece dating from the early 20th century, shaped like a stack of four imposing bound books. Both decorative and functional, it reflects the taste for secret-compartment furniture and illusionist designs that were highly popular in bourgeois interiors.

The front realistically replicates the spines of richly bound books, adorned with gilt metal clasps and half-titles, while the sides are covered with an elegant marbled paper reminiscent of the endpapers of antique bindings. The top panel imitates a large folio covered with green leather-like paper embossed with gold motifs.

Lifting this hinged panel reveals a carefully arranged interior that highlights its primary function as a parlor commode.

A side compartment, complete with a lid, was designed to hold the accessories necessary for its use.
