"hermes Of The Belvedere," Carved In Alabaster, Grand Tour, Circa 1830, 58 Cm Tall.
Large carved alabaster statuette depicting the Hermes of the Belvedere. Height: 58 cm.
Discovered during the Renaissance in Rome near the ancient mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, the ancient statue was initially identified as a depiction of Antinous or Apollo. It was later agreed that it was, in fact, a depiction of the god Hermes.
Carved from beautiful statuary alabaster (light in color and veinless, with a fine, even grain), this Hermes is a work of fine quality, featuring crisp, precise details and a very beautiful face.
The overall condition is excellent, with the exception of the fingertips of the hand positioned behind the back, which are missing—a detail that remains barely noticeable given its location.
The sculpture has retained its beautiful antique patina, and its large size makes it a striking and highly decorative piece.
French or Italian work dating from the first third of the 19th century in the tradition of Grand Tour creations.
Note: No shipping by mail. Must be picked up in person or shipped at the buyer’s discretion and expense.
