Antique Russian Icon "our Lady Of The Sign" (znamenie) – Late 18th / Early 19th Century

Description of the Work: A refined and evocative antique Russian icon depicting "Our Lady of the Sign" (Znamenie), painted in egg tempera on a thick wooden panel and dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century (Imperial Era). The iconography, of Byzantine origin, shows the Virgin Mary in an *orans* posture with raised arms and open hands. On her chest, she bears a medallion (*clipeus*) containing Christ Emmanuel in a blessing gesture, holding the scroll of the Scriptures. The side borders (*kovcheg*) feature exquisite depictions of two standing patron saints holding unfurled scrolls—elements indicating that the panel was commissioned for private devotional use. The reverse of the panel features the characteristic pair of horizontal interlocking reinforcement battens (*shponki*), typical of Russian icon carpentry from this period. Condition: The icon remains in its original state, retaining its "original patina." It has not undergone invasive modern restoration. It displays a splendid, dense natural craquelure across the entire surface and a fascinating darkening of the faces caused by the natural oxidation of the ancient protective varnish (*olifa*), which serves as a guarantee of its absolute authenticity. There is slight, normal wear consistent with age along the edges of the panel.
