Biography:
A painter renowned for his Provençal landscapes, Raymond Allègre also distinguished himself in Orientalist painting. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where he befriended Jean-Baptiste Olive, he went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studios of Jean-Paul Laurens, Antoine Vollon, and Léon Bonnat. Beginning in 1875, he painted landscapes of the Paris region and Normandy.Upon his return to Provence, Raymond Allègre depicted, in particular, Martigues, Monaco, and their surroundings. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1880 and 1932, won numerous awards, and saw several of his works acquired by the French government. During a trip in 1900, he discovered Venice, a city that immediately captured his heart and inspired many of his paintings. That same year, he contributed to the decoration of the restaurant Le Train Bleu, located in the Gare de Lyon in Paris, by creating the panels Algiers and Cassis.
