A Rectangular Chrysoprase-green Opaline Glass Ashtray With Gilt-bronze Mounts, Charles X / Loui
A rectangular table ashtray in chrysoprase-green opaline, encircled by a double frame of chiselled and gilded bronze decorated with friezes of latticework and ovals. The upper rim features a transverse cigarette rest in gilded bronze. The piece rests on four claw feet in gilded bronze.
France. Charles X / Louis-Philippe period.
H 4.5 cm, L 13.5 cm, D 8.5 cm.
Very good condition.
Whilst the small make-up pots, circular boxes and circular ashtrays in chrysoprase-green or ‘cédrat’-coloured opaline are emblematic of the Charles X period, the rectangular form fashioned into an ashtray (or desk bowl) is much rarer. French crystal manufacturers (such as Baccarat, Choisy-le-Roi and Bercy) collaborated with the finest Parisian bronze workshops to adorn these everyday items with mountings of great finesse, combining here rigorous elegance combining here the austere elegance of neoclassical lines with the charming claw feet inherited from the Empire style.
