Gilded Wooden Parlor Set Upholstered With Aubusson Tapestry, Louis XVI Period, 18th Century
- Living room set (sofa and armchairs) in gilded wood and upholstery, consisting of a three-seater sofa and six queen-style armchairs, an 18th-century piece dating from around 1780–1790
- The gilded woodwork is as follows: tapered turned front and rear legs with fluted shafts topped by a ring, a trapezoidal band with a convex front, molded crossbars, protruding blocks with hollow backs and rosettes on the front faces, elegantly turned baluster-style armrests carved with fluting, straight armrests fitted with cuffs, headpieces adorned with a delicately carved rosette echoing that of the spandrels, concave connectors with molding on the front and sides, and a rectangular open-back with a notched upper crossbar.
- This living room set stands out for its pleasing proportions, which provide the utmost in seating comfort, and—a true delight to the eye—for its harmonious lines.
- The sofa and armchairs are fully upholstered (seats, backs, and armrests) with a contemporary tapestry matching the woodwork. These are 18th-century Aubusson tapestries inspired by François Boucher’s “Pastorals,” which were very much in vogue at the time. Woven from wool and silk, the figures are set against a light beige background, ensuring harmony with the gilded woodwork. On each seat, the decorative motif is repeated, while the backrest features a pastoral scene depicting children, dramatically framed by a pink drapery arranged around it, tied at the corners, and from the center of which hang two tassels of trimmings. The entire scene is surrounded by a garland of flowers. This garland continues onto the seat, thus creating a visual connection and framing an animal scene related to fables (“The Wolf and the Stork,” “The Fox and the Stork,” “The Lioness and the Bear,” etc.). Once again, a knotted drapery arrangement is featured on the front of the seat, echoing that of the backrest, while the armrests feature floral motifs.
- In good condition; some wear on the upholstery and gilding should be noted.
- Dimensions - Armchair height: 92 cm, width: 63.5 cm, depth: 54 cm // Sofa height: 102 cm, width: 162 cm, depth: 70 cm
