Like amphorae, this type of vase—called a Pelike—was used to store foodstuffs in ancient Greece from the 6th to the 5th century B.C.
Toward the end of the 19th century, travelers on the Grand Tour could purchase replicas of these vases that they had admired on site. Made of terracotta, they were handcrafted and decorated with figures and designs just like the originals. Makers even went so far as to reproduce their archaeological appearance with missing color or details in the design, as well as wear and natural deposits.
These are clearly visible on the seated female figure holding an offering dish and the two nude men, likely musicians.Beautiful decoration featuring a Greek frieze and palmettes.
