“zum Andenken” Porcelain Jug, Polychrome Decoration, Germany/austria, 19th Century
White porcelain jug (milk or water jug) with a spout, a shaped foot, and a handle featuring a double twisted (braided) band. The rim of the opening is edged with gold filigree.
The decoration is arranged in two registers:
• in the upper register, monochrome gray-black bouquets of cut flowers, with small scattered blossoms filling the space;
• on the main body, a polychrome still life featuring a vase or urn of pink roses, a telescope, books, and a scroll bearing the handwritten dedication “Zum Andenken” (“in memory of”), surrounded by foliage.
The subject—the dedicatory scroll combined with symbols of travel (telescope) and affection (roses, books) — is typical of souvenir porcelain/Andenken production in the Austro-German region during the Biedermeier period (early 19th century, ca. 1820–1850), intended as a commemorative gift for a special occasion or a journey.
