Ulpiano Checa Y Sanz : “the Ox-drawn Carriage”
Ulpiano Checay Sanz (1860–1916): “The Ox Cart,” watercolor, 30 × 43 cm, mounted on pH-neutral board under museum-grade glass in a molded wooden frame, 50 ×65 cm.
Signed, dated 1909, and located in Ávila, it features on the reverse a pencil study oftwo Roman women on a terrace.
The artist, a virtuoso celebrated in Spain, France, and Argentina alike, presents us here with a snapshot of peasant life in central Spain : under a blazing sun, a peasant protected by a large hat and a blanket guides his cart at the slow pace of his oxen.
