An antique terracotta bust depicting a man of letters, created by the Belgian sculptor Louis Dupuis (1842–1921).
Crafted in the naturalistic style characteristic of the late 19th century.
The figure is depicted resting on a stack of books—a symbol of knowledge and erudition—adorned with a relief of an ivy branch, a plant traditionally associated with fidelity, knowledge, and immortality.
This composition is fully in keeping with the Symbolist and Art Nouveau aesthetics of its time.
The signature “LOUIS DUPUIS” is stamped on the side of the base.
Louis Dupuis was one of the leading Belgian sculptors of his time, a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and the creator of numerous public monuments as well as portraits of prominent figures from the worlds of art, science, and politics.
