18th Century. Louis XV Commode Chair

In a world where, even among the highest echelons of society, running water is not a given, relieving oneself remains a matter of comfort that has raised various answers. 
In the 18th century, it was common to have commode chairs in bedrooms, while in living rooms, people placed odd-looking stools adorned with fake folio-sized books titled “Journey to Holland.” "
The commode chair conforms to the prevailing fashion; thus, this commode chair is decorated with curved legs, scrolls, and small flowers. The seat and backrest are cane-woven.
A chest conceals the chamber pot.
The one we’re presenting has seen better days, but despite the “conversation” it had with what were not faces, it remains quite stable (and silent…).
The legs have been reinforced, the cane work has been redone and is in good condition—with a few small gaps and old marks from chisels—and it stands as a wonderful testament to the decorative arts of an era when “going to the commode” could be done while chatting cheerfully....
