Ebony Cabinet With Viennese Enamel, 19th Century

A ceremonial cabinet in ebony veneer, sumptuously adorned with finely chiseled gilded bronze and a remarkable set of hand-painted Viennese enamel plaques on a gold background. A true masterpiece of Viennese decorative arts, it exemplifies the refinement and virtuosity of Austrian workshops in the late 19th century.

The enamel panels depict delicate mythological and allegorical scenes inspired by antiquity, featuring deities, cupids, and celestial figures in compositions of great finesse. The richness of detail, the precision of the design, and the brilliance of the colors contrasting with the gold background lend the piece a remarkable pictorial quality.

The cabinet’s architecture is enhanced by fluted columns, abundant Renaissance-style ornamentation, and superb gilded bronze elements, including sculpted putti at the corners and a spectacular gilded bronze group crowning the piece, accentuating its monumental and prestigious character.

The two doors reveal an interior entirely fitted with drawers and compartments, which are also decorated with Viennese enamel plaques on a gold background depicting additional mythological and allegorical scenes. This rich ornamentation attests to exceptional craftsmanship, harmoniously combining cabinetmaking, enamel painting, and bronze sculpture.

Produced in the most prestigious Viennese workshops of the second half of the 19th century, Viennese enamels were particularly sought after by European courts and major collectors for their quality of workmanship and artistic refinement.
