Louis-philippe-style Sphere-shaped Display Cabinet - Attributed To Alexandre-louis Bellangé (1797–1861)
A Louis-Philippe-style display cabinet in ebony and tortoiseshell on a red background, richly decorated with engraved brass inlays featuring arabesque, bird, and floral motifs. The single-door glass front, framed by slightly flared pilasters, rests on a stepped, carved base.
The abundant ornamentation of finely chiseled and gilded bronze, consisting of foliage masks, allegorical trophies, satyr heads, rocaille motifs, acanthus friezes, and rosettes, attests to the exceptional quality of this piece. Some of the frames bear the monogram “bT” on the reverse. The lock is adorned with a rocaille mask, and the display case still retains its key.
This piece, characteristic of the work of Alexandre-Louis Bellangé in the 1840s–1850s, was attributed to the cabinetmaker by Sylvain Cordier, a specialist in the Bellangé dynasty and author of the reference work Bellangé, Cabinetmakers: A History of Taste in the 19th Century.
