Bronze Fireplace Trim – Richard Frères, Paris – Napoleon III Period
A finely chiseled bronze mantelpiece set, consisting of a clock and a pair of five-light candelabra, in gilded and silver-plated bronze. The movement is signed Richard Frères, Paris, a prestigious 19th-century clockmaking firm.
The clock is topped by a remarkable composition depicting two horses at full gallop in silver-plated bronze, accompanied by a hunting dog in gilded bronze, illustrating the theme of hunting with hounds. The quality of the chiseling, the naturalism of the animals, and the richness of the details attest to exceptional craftsmanship.
The enameled dial is framed by an elegant gilt-bronze bezel decorated with foliage. The matching candelabra feature silver-plated bronze columns adorned with rich gilded bronze mounts, with five light arms decorated with volutes, foliage, and gadroons. The tripod bases are embellished with winged sphinxes, emblematic of the eclectic style of the Second Empire.
With the harmony of its two patinas, the quality of its craftsmanship, and its elegance, this set is a remarkable example of French decorative art from the Napoleonic III era.
