"Napoleon III Fireplace Set"
A gilt bronze clock set known as the "Harpy" clock, after a design by Jean Bérain (17th century). This model features a woman's mask at its center, flanked by female Herms, a motif repeated on the candelabra. At the top is a covered vase surmounted by crossed oak leaves. The sculpted bronze dial is flanked by enamel cartouches displaying the hours in Arabic numerals. The clock rests on a solid base ending in lion's paw feet. The candelabra each hold eight candle holders and share the same design features as the clock on their lower sections. The size of this set gives it a substantial presence in a room. (The mechanism is complete and strikes the hours and half-hours, but requires servicing.)
