Mantel Clock “the Chariot Of Apollo”, Attributed To Jean-simon Deverberie
A gilded and patinated bronze mantel clock depicting Apollo’s chariot. The god Apollo is seated on a chariot richly adorned with laurel garlands and drapery, holding his lyre. The team consists of two horses guided by a young figure identified as Hermes, standing on the head of the satyr Marsyas. The composition is enriched with numerous finely chiseled bronze decorations: lion and eagle heads, caryatids, beaded friezes, rosettes, and acanthus motifs.
The white enamel dial, integrated into the chariot’s wheel, displays the hours in Roman numerals with openwork hands. The entire piece rests on a rectangular wooden base added at a later date.
Dimensions: 77.5 × 25.5 × 49.5 cm.
Condition: gilding partially worn and oxidized; mechanism incomplete (the bell, balance wheel, suspension fork, and one hand are missing). Visible wear and restoration on certain parts (harness, manes, fine cracks in the horses’ enameled eyes).
Model attributed to the bronze artist Jean-Simon Deverberie, known for his allegorical clocks and high-quality gilded bronze compositions, which are well-documented and featured in several collections and auctions.
