“Terre de fer” is a term used to describe a type of fine earthenware, similar to porcelain, to which feldspar and kaolin are added to make it whiter and more durable.
Creil-Montereau earthenware is a type of ceramic produced in the towns of Montereau, in the Seine-et-Marne department, and Creil, in the Oise department. Founded in 1797, the Creil factory—mentioned by Gustave Flaubert in *L'Éducation sentimentale*—experienced its main growth during the 19th century.
