Georges Van der Straeten (1856-1928) is a Belgian sculptor from Ghent. Trained by his compatriot Jef Lambeaux (1852-1908), he settled in Paris in 1883 where he exhibited regularly at the Salon between 1885 and 1912 and took part in the Universal Exhibition of 1900, at which he was awarded a silver medal. He became known for his representations of young Parisian women in various attitudes in the style of Watteau's paintings, in keeping with the taste of the Belle Epoque.
A label from the Krieger house is visible on the reverse. Founded in 1826 by Antoine and Nicolas Krieger, it initially specialized in the production of furniture in the Louis XV, Louis XVI and Empire styles before developing a large decoration department. The house took part in numerous exhibitions, such as the Universal Exhibitions of 1855 and 1900.
