Vincente Masip Workshop 1475–1545 Valencia, Spain 'holy Family' Ca. 1510–1520
- Vicente Masip, known as “Masip the Elder,” was a Spanish Renaissance painter, born in Andilla around 1475 and died in Valencia in 1545.
- * | The work is executed in tempera on a poplar panel, created around 1510–1520; one can sense | the influence of Leonardo da Vinci in the contorted body of the infant Jesus and the gentle face of the Madonna, combined with the Hispanic taste for vivid colors. This style emerged among Masip’s disciples after the return in 1516 of Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina and Hernando de los Llanos, who arrived in Valencia. They had been trained in Italy in the circle of Leonardo da Vinci. Vicente Masip then achieved his definitive pictorial language in the Quattrocento style. ** I am including X-ray images of the work’s condition at the time of acquisition; the work was subsequently restored by ‘Art Gate’ 1180 Brussels
