Red Marble Obelisk From The Grand Tour Rome, 19th Century
An obelisk made of rosso anticomarble, decorated with hieroglyphs, standing on a base bearing the inscription “Obelisco Flaminio.”
The Flaminio Obelisk was originally located in the Circus Maximus and was moved to Piazza del Popolo in 1589. In the early 19th century, Giuseppe Valadier placed it at the center of the Fountain of the Lions.
A typical Grand Tour souvenir, roughly the size of a desk ornament, it has a few small chips on the base and tip, visible in the photo.
