An elegant miniature painted in oil on copper depicting a gentleman from the second half of the 17th century.

Depicted in a three-quarter view against a dark background, the subject is clad in a loose-fitting brown coat that reveals a rich, finely embroidered lace cravat. His long hair, characteristic of the fashion in vogue during the reign of Louis XIV, frames a face with delicately modeled features, rendered with great sensitivity.

Painted in oil on a copper plate, this miniature exemplifies the qualities unique to this medium, which was particularly prized in the 17th century for the finesse of execution it allowed and the depth of its tones. Despite surface wear due to its age, the work remains fully legible and still allows the viewer to appreciate the quality of the painter’s hand. The skin tones feature subtle shading, the eyes are rendered with precision, while the details of the lace and the long strands of hair attest to particularly meticulous execution.

Presented in an oval metal frame, likely from the 19th century, without protective glass, the painting is visible directly on its copper support, offering the characteristic reflections of this painting technique.

In good overall condition. The surface shows uniform wear consistent with its age, without detracting from the composition or the portrait’s elegance.
