Miniature on ivory representing a young child, bust and front view. The white shirt is slightly open. The child has short hair revealing a rounded forehead. A coral necklace adorns his neck. This young child stands out against a monochrome brown-green background. The miniature is signed Mutel. In a wooden frame, brass frame and curved glass.

A pupil of Madame de Mirbel, Louise-Herminie Mutel (Reims 1811- Paris 1881) exhibited at the Salon from 1839 to 1855 and frequently received distinctions there: 3rd class medal in 1839; 2nd class in 1841, and 1st class in 1845. She may have been the daughter of Alexandrine Mutel, a porcelain painter in Paris who exhibited at the Salon from 1817 to 1827. She was one of the good miniature painters active in the mid-19th century. She learned from Madame de Mirbel and was greatly influenced by her style. LEARN MORE
