Set Of Helmet And Breastplate For A Line Cuirassier, French Cavalry, Third Republic, 1874-1914
A spectacular set consisting of a helmet and cuirass worn by a French cuirassier.
This type of set was worn by cuirassier regiments from 1874 until the start of World War I in 1914.
It consists of:
1/ A Model 1874 crested helmet in very good condition.
The helmet shell, visor, and neck guard are made of steel. The back of the helmet is marked with several serial numbers of the cuirassiers who wore this helmet, head size "55", and the manufacturer’s mark.
The crest and headband are made of brass. The headband is adorned on the front with a flaming grenade and laurel leaves. The crest features a "medusa" mask at the top. Its sides are decorated with gadroons, palmettes, and water leaves. The ensemble is topped by a stylized red horsehair "houpette".
The chin straps are made of brass and decorated with stylized scales.
The inner lining is made of black leather. The inside of the visor is lined with leather sheepskin. Minor signs of wear on the helmet and liner. The leather piece lining the neck cover is missing.
Original mane made of black horsehair, approximately 75 cm long.
Brass plume holder.
Sold with a period plume made of scarlet feathers, complete with its light blue "olive".
Total height (without the mane): 35 cm
2/ A cuirass of the type worn by Napoleon III’s Imperial Guard (1854 model), which line cuirassiers continued to wear after the fall of the Second Empire with a few minor modifications (removal of the hooks for the aiguillette and cartridge pouch).
It consists of a breastplate and a backplate.
In very good overall condition. The breastplate and backplate have never been separated—they wore the same serial number, “181".
The breastplate was manufactured during the Second Empire, though the date and manufacturer are now difficult to read. Same size and width.
Shoulder pieces with gilded brass chains mounted on leather.
At the back, the shoulder pieces are attached to the backplate with metal plates.
At the front, they lock onto the breastplate using rectangular steel latches.
Very good overall condition. The leather belt is missing. The leather on the shoulder piece is original but shows some wear (barely visible).
