Jacques Bertaux - Cavalry Battle Scene - Oil On Canvas, Signed And Dated (1770)
Artist: Bertaux Jacques (1745 - 1818, France)
Jacques BERTAUX (1745–1818)
Cavalry Battle Scene
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower right (date barely legible, probably 1770)
65.5 x 54.5 cm (84 x 74 cm with frame)
Very good condition
This painting depicts a fierce cavalry engagement. In the center, an officer stands in his stirrups, saber raised, ready to strike. Around him, the melee rages: a white horse collapses to the ground, dragging its rider down; soldiers already lie lifeless in the foreground; while in the background, a charge continues beneath a sky heavy with clouds streaked with golden light. An overturned barrel and weapons scattered on the ground accentuate the chaos of the scene. The composition, focused on the main group and opening up into the depth of field toward the distant battle, is characteristic of the artist’s military scenes.
Condition
Good overall condition. No inscriptions or markings on the back of the canvas.
Frame
19th-century stucco frame with a bronze patina, decorated with foliage and shells. Good condition.
The Artist
Born in 1745, Jacques Bertaux was a student of the painter Jean-Jacques Bachelier. He initially focused on genre scenes and hunting subjects before devoting himself to battle scenes, the genre for which he became renowned. He is notably known for several large historical compositions that remain famous, such as The Storming of the Tuileries Palace on August 10, 1792 (Palace of Versailles) and The Imperial Procession Heading to Notre-Dame for Napoleon’s Coronation in 1804. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In addition to these large-scale official canvases, Bertaux painted numerous battle scenes of a more modest size, in a style and color palette that have been compared to those of Jean Pillement.
