Limestone Fountain Spout / Mascaron, 18th Century
- A limestone fountain spout, an 18th-century work. This mascaron depicts a male figure whose design, with its aquatic motifs, elegantly complements its function of discharging water. The oval of his face is framed by thick, flowing hair, which is rendered in thick, twisting—even serpentine—locks, giving the impression of still being wet, as if this head had just emerged from the water. This impression is reinforced by his headdress, composed of carefully combed reed foliage pointing upward.
- The lively expression on this face is due in part to the quality of the sculpture, notably its excessively puffed-out cheeks and its mouth, wide open in an “o” shape to expel water with great force. When placed in context, the water flowing from her mouth further enhances the power of her expression.
- In good condition, though some missing pieces and wear are present (see photos).
- Dimensions: height 37.5 cm, width 23 cm, depth 20 cm, mouth diameter 2 cm
