René dePauw (1887–1946): “Sailor’s Wife, Woman of Sorrow,” oil on panel, 110 ×100 cm, mounted in a flocked frame with a gold patina 125 × 114 cm.
Signed andlocated in Heist (for Heist-sur-mer, near Knokke), countersigned and located again on the reverse, which also bears a label overlaid with a stamp from the1943 Spring Salon of the City of Liège, providing the title, date,the artist’s address, and even… its price at the time!
René de Pauw was born in Pittem, Belgium, and trained at the Academy ofBruges. His early works belong to a luminous post-Impressionist style thatlater gave way to a darker realism, sculpting his figures ina limited palette and a perfectly composed solemnity, of which the murals atthe Bruges train station and our painting are perfect examples.
This beautiful young woman, who has just nursed her baby—who has fallen asleep after feeding—thinks sadly of her husband, who is at sea…
The superb triangular composition is framed by the rustic still lifecomposed of the coffee pot and earthenware bowl, the monochromatic shades of ochre andbrown, the light—both direct and reflected (the baby’s skin!!)—and its formatmake this a museum-quality piece.
