Emile Berchmans : "the Lady With The Big Hat"
EmileBerchmans (1867–1947) (attributed to): “Woman with a Large Hat,”oil on canvas mounted on panel, 32.5 × 16.5 cm, framed in amodern gilded frame (minor imperfections).
Attribution and date (1913) inscribed on the back.
Enchanting.
That was my first thought upon seeing this painting for the first time:the accuracy of this lady’s posture in her visiting attire as she takes off her coatin a bourgeois interior; the sketch-like treatment enhanced by the long, all contribute to the charm of the work, whose style is consistent with the sketches of the Belgian master to whom it is attributed.
Due to the texture of the canvas, which catches the light, the photos do not do it justice.
