Senneh Oriental Rug, Iran: 190 X 290 Cm, Persian Kurdistan – "galerie Sardje"
Rare Senneh (Sanandaj) carpet, Persian Kurdistan – Late 19th century, in perfect condition
An elegant antique carpet attributed to the prestigious workshops of Senneh (now Sanandaj), the historic capital of Persian Kurdistan, whose carpets are renowned for the fineness of their knotting, the subtlety of their designs, and the harmony of their colors.
Origin: Senneh (Sanandaj), Persian Kurdistan / Iran
Period: late 19th century – early 20th century – Qajar Dynasty period
Technique: hand-knotted wool on a cotton warp and weft.
Dimensions: 190 × 290 cm.
This piece is distinguished by a remarkable ivory field entirely covered with the famous Herati (Mahi) pattern, skillfully arranged in a highly regular composition. At its center is an imposing, deeply night-blue, multi-lobed medallion, whose design consists of the rare and alluring “Golfarang” motif—literally European-style flowers. Introduced into Persian decorative arts in the 19th century under Western influence, this design combines generous naturalistic roses, peonies, and fully bloomed flowers, offering a refined contrast to the geometric precision of the Herati background. This fusion of Persian tradition and European floral inspiration is one of the most sought-after hallmarks of the great workshops of western Persia.
The wide main border, richly adorned with palmettes, scrollwork, and stylized flowers on a dusty pink background, frames the entire design with remarkable elegance and highlights the depth of the blues, the luminous ivories, olive greens, and coral hues, whose patina acquired over time gives the rug an exceptional presence.
The weave, which is particularly fine, is executed in high-quality wool on a cotton warp and weft, ensuring both suppleness, precision of design, and excellent durability. The fineness of the knotting and the balance of the composition attest to the craftsmanship of the finest workshops in Senneh, whose productions rank among the most refined rugs of Persian Kurdistan.
Senneh carpets have long been sought after by collectors for their timeless elegance, their exquisitely delicate designs, and the quality of their craftsmanship. They hold a special place in major collections of antique carpets and remain among the most distinguished works of Persian textile art.
