Louis Majorelle (1859–1926) “olga” Table—1900 Paris World’s Fair—

Artist: Louis Majorelle (1859-1926)

An elegant Art Nouveau marquetry parlor table from around 1900, bearing the inlaid stamp "L. MAJORELLE" (Louis Majorelle, 1859–1926). This is a documented model known as "Olga," originally exhibited (as item No. 323) at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. It is also referenced in Alastair Duncan’s book *Majorelle* (page 183). Notably, the final photograph shows an identical model acquired by and displayed in the collection of the renowned Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Orlando, Florida—a museum celebrated for its Art Nouveau collection, which houses, among other treasures, the world's most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. This exquisite table features a structure of finely carved fruitwood with two tiered shelves, adorned with nature-inspired marquetry of great ornamental refinement depicting branches with buds and blossoms in full bloom. The design is further enhanced by gilt-bronze side handles that add a high-quality sculptural touch. The fluidity of the lines, the movement of the supports, and the delicacy of the motifs perfectly embody Majorelle’s artistic style, rooted in the observation of nature and artisanal excellence. Dimensions: 80 cm high x 80 cm wide x 60 cm deep.

Louis Majorelle was a leading figure of the École de Nancy and one of the greatest names in French Art Nouveau furniture. The son of a cabinetmaker, Majorelle trained in Nancy and then at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris before taking over the family business, steering its production toward Art Nouveau under the influence of Émile Gallé. Beginning in the 1890s, he incorporated naturalistic marquetry and iconic motifs such as water lilies, thistles, and dragonflies into his designs. In 1900, he also established his own forge to produce metal fittings and bronze elements to complement his designs.
