The French painter Jean-Gabriel Domergue was a pupil of Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He became famous for his portraits of elegant women and graceful nudes. He also made a name for himself as a designer of Art Deco posters. From 1927, the artist settled in Cannes, where he took an active part in cultural life and built up a wealthy clientele for his portraits of women. In 1934, he built Villa Fiesole (later Villa Domergue), where many celebrities, including Gina Lollobrigida and Brigitte Bardot, posed. A worldly artist, Domergue saw the most beautiful women of his time, from Rita Hayworth to Liliane de Pougy, pass in front of his easel. His portraits were essentially dedicated to the image of women: celebrities, actresses, dancers, aristocrats or beautiful unknowns, his models always presented the typical physique of the "Parisienne" he loved so much: slim, graceful, casual and often nude. He won a gold medal at the 1920 Salon. He thus offered a veritable panorama of the Tout-Paris of the 1920s and 1930s
