Vincenzo Coronelli (1650–1718) Map Of Southern China And Taiwan From 1696

Important copperplate engraving, hand-colored outlines, a single sheet consisting of two glued together, with Italian text.  An important map, an extraordinary example of Coronelli’s skill as a cartographer. This is one of eight engravings dedicated to China. This map of the provinces of Quantung and Fokien in China is dedicated to the Most Reverend Father Carlo Trigona of the Society of Jesus, theologian to the Most Illustrious Archbishop of Palermo.  Map of Guangdong and Fujian in China, including the islands of Hainan and Taiwan, the South China Sea, and part of Luzon in the Philippines. Among Coronelli’s maps, this is the one that focuses most on Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in Macau, and it is one of the most detailed depictions of Taiwan from the 17th century.  The finely engraved map is embellished with a military cartouche. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli was an important 17th-century cartographer and globe maker active in Venice.
