18th-century Venetian Box With Under-glass Painting
A rare box with gilded and molded frames, featuring central panels of paper-painted scenes under glass. With animal-shaped feet and relief panels on the sides framing the polychrome figurative scenes, the box’s architectural design is reminiscent of Renaissance wedding chests. On the lid, a perspective view of a port city, typical of 18th-century urban cartography; on the front, a lively scene with a pastoral or hunting theme; on the back, in the center, a nobleman’s residence flanked by figures in period dress with a galleon or vessel; on the sides, a citadel or urban panorama typical of the era.
Inside, original period paper lining. It is in good condition, consistent with its age and signs of use.
