Gérard FAGARD, born in 1938, was an outstanding colorist and heir to Fauvism
This artist roamed the hills, seaside, and countryside in search of the perfect light
In 1957, heenrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen
1959:G. FAGARD followed his parents, who settled permanently in Sanary (VAR). He began his studies in October at the School of Fine Arts in Toulon. Despite a five-year deferment, he was forced to abandon his studies for 28 months of military service in Bourg-Saint-Maurice and then in Algeria, from which he returned deeply shaken. Despite his strong affinity for the South of France, he chose, of his own accord, to resume his studies in Rouen. In June, he earned the C.A.F.A.S. (Certificate of Advanced Artistic Training) and began a career as an art teacher in October.
1968. The WEIL Gallery on Avenue Matignon exhibited several of the artist’s paintings and included him in a group exhibition in New York.
1973:He was transferred to BRIGNOLES (VAR) in the south. His daughter Servane is born. He begins his new position in September at the Brignoles middle school. He establishes a second visual arts studio and quickly makes a name for himself by organizing several exhibitions. He wins first prize in painting at the Brignoles Fair. Illustrated a book of 80 pen-and-ink drawings titled “Brignoles mes amours,” featuring biographical anecdotes by Abbé GUILLOT.
1976:Having always wanted to move to SANARY, he secured a transfer to LA VALETTE DU VAR. Now a permanent resident of SANARY, G. FAGARD, encouraged and assisted by his father, built his own house after drawing up the plans himself. Construction took more than two years.
1981:First trip to ROMANIA with the intention of adopting a little girl.
1982:Second trip to Romania and full adoption of his daughter Andréa.
1983:Exhibitions come in rapid succession: Sanary, Ollioules, Toulon, Marseille, Paris, etc...
Joined the PAUL RICARD Foundation on the island of BENDOR, where he taught drawing and painting classes to adults for ten years.
1993:Death of his wife Françoise after a long illness. Although he had family responsibilities, he nevertheless chose to work part-time until retirement so he could paint more.
1998:The professor retires. He now devotes all his time to painting.
He passed away in 2021
